Nordby Maskin success: Digital machine management and ISO re-certification

Featured Image

The reality of managing over 900 machines and equipment

Managing a large fleet of construction machinery requires sophisticated digital solutions that effectively track, handle, and optimize operations. Nordby Maskin faced a specific challenge: efficiently managing their extensive machinery fleet while meeting strict standards for quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.

From contract to implementation

Nordby Maskin signed an agreement with Barde on June 20, 2024, seeking practical solutions for their operational needs. With over 900 machines, vehicles, and equipment now registered in the Barde platform, the system has become an essential part of their daily operations.

"The Barde team understood what we needed," explains Karl Martin Nordby at Nordby Maskin. "We were looking for solutions that could support our growth and help us develop our business further."

Core solutions driving results

Nordby Maskin has implemented two core elements from the Barde platform:

  1. Maintenance management and Service: Tracking and managing all maintenance activities
  2. Barde Felt (Field app): Data collection and reporting from field locations

In addition, they plan to soon implement Machine Planner for planning and maximizing machine utilization, which will give them even better control over their machinery fleet.

Tobias Rosenberg, Barde's Customer Success Specialist, worked with Nordby's team including Henning Engebretsen, their IT specialist, throughout the implementation. Tobias ensured that Nordby got maximum value from the system and that the implementation was successful.

ISO recertification made measurably easier

Nordby Maskin was first ISO certified three years ago. When they underwent their recertification this year, they had implemented the Barde system, which significantly simplified the process. The platform's documentation handling and data collection provided valuable support during the audit.

ISO 45001: Occupational health and safety

For ISO 45001 certification, Barde provides:

  • Digital safety routines: Operators complete and document inspections via the app.
  • Automatic saftey alerts: The system identifies machines with unresolved issues.
  • Digital incident documentation: Safety incidents are recorded for analysis and improvement.

ISO 9001: Quality management

For ISO 9001 quality standards, Barde delivers:

  • Consistent processes: Digital work orders and maintenance tracking ensure standardization.
  • Risk reduction: Proactive maintenance planning minimizes unexpected downtime.
  • Evidence-based decisions: Historical service data informs continuous improvement.

Certification impact in practice

During recertification, Karl Martin described a concrete example of Barde's value:

"We use Barde to check machine certifications and documentation, especially when information in other systems is not properly updated. During the audit, we could open Barde and find documentation of completed annual inspections, which prevented potential non-conformities."

Nordby Maskin is now exploring how they can use the platform for deeper analysis of fuel consumption and other environmental parameters to meet upcoming environmental requirements.

Complete maintenance history available

Barde has recently imported Nordby's entire maintenance history from an older, less efficient system they used previously. This means that every repair, service note, and maintenance record is now available to Nordby's team, providing a complete picture of each machine's history.

Management perspective

Kristian Tangen, Managing Director at Nordby Maskin, views the Barde implementation as strategically important:

"The construction industry faces increasing demands for documentation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Barde's system has given us a better tool to handle this, especially during our recertification process."

Next steps

With ISO certification maintained, Nordby Maskin is now focusing on:

  • Expanding environmental monitoring for sustainability goals
  • Improving proactive maintenance to minimize downtime
  • Using fleet data to optimize resource allocation

The collaboration between Nordby Maskin and Barde shows how digital systems in the construction industry can deliver more than efficiency—they enable higher standards for quality, safety, and environmental performance.

As Karl Martin Nordby summarizes: "With Barde, we manage our machines better to build a stronger business."
